Every season a landowner would have to give a portion of his harvest to the pharaoh as tax. It was this man's job to make sure that the boundary stones which marked a farmer's property were in place. If the boundary stones were in the right place he would figure out how much tax to charge the farmer on his crops.

The hieroglyphs above his head read, 'As the great god in heaven endures the stone is correct, its position stands fast'.
