In the New Kingdom pharaohs were buried in rock-cut tombs in the Valley of the Kings. This lonely and hidden place was located in the shadow of a natural mountain shaped like a pyramid. Thus, even though the pharaohs did not build pyramids out of stone anymore, pyramids were still spiritually important to them.
